When you are looking for a job, your first presentation of yourself and your skills is your resume. If you have a poorly written resume that does not represent your achievements and accomplishments well, you could be completely overlooked for an interview. Employers generally glance at a resume for 10-15 seconds, so you have very little time to catch their attention. Hiring managers search for a few key items when they are sifting through the piles of resumes they get every single day. So what exactly do employers look for in a resume?
• Results- Employers want to see that you deliver results in your position. Use specific numbers (I added 25 new customers in 1 month) to give the hiring manager a clear perspective of how you have contributed in previous jobs and how you will add value if you get the position at their company.
• Promotions- Employers want to see that you have moved up in a company or consistently advanced in your career. If another company was impressed enough to give you a promotion, then you must be skilled at your job.
• Job Stability- Candidates who have worked at jobs for significant amounts of time are more appealing to hiring managers. Why? Because if someone is a job-hopper, then it is safe to expect that they will continue hopping. Someone who has been loyal to their previous employers is much more desirable.
The three points above are truly important to getting the attention of any hiring manager. There are other aspects to a resume that can cause managers to toss it directly into the trash. Hiring managers will throw your resume to the side if:
• Your spelling and grammar are not correct. If you have glaring spelling and grammar mistakes on your resume, you will not be given a second glance. With the huge amount of competition in the workforce today, someone who does not thoroughly check their work will not cut it. Review your resume many times and enlist a friend or relative to help you as well.
• Incorrect information. If an employer finds something on your resume that is incorrect due to an error or is a complete fabrication, you will not be getting a call for an interview. Employers look for honesty and accuracy.
The first step to getting a great job is a great resume. Market yourself by selling your strengths and accomplishments and make sure to edit thoroughly for errors. Your next job could be right around the corner, so always have an updated resume at the ready!
